Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia: In Search of the Holy Grail

This editorial in the May 2007 issue of Anesthesia and Analgesia by Terese Horlocker and Denise Wedel gives a viewpoint about the current state of ultrasound for regional anesthesia. It refers to five articles in the same issue, including a review of the topic by Marhofer and Chan (free full text access here!). The key points in the editorial are: US guided blocks are generally better than single injection techniques (although more evidence is needed) and the risk of complications may be lower (or the diagnosis of complication may just be better documented).

This is an important issue about an important change in anaesthesia.
