Adverse effects of Nitrous Oxide anaesthesia: The ENIGMA study

The full report of the ENIGMA study will be published in the August issue of Anesthesiology. This large multicentre RCT examined the effect of nitrous oxide versus no nitrous on patients having surgery greater than two hours duration. Westmead was one of the main recruitment sites. The abstract states that the nitrous group had worse outcome including increased wound infection, pneumonia, atelectasis. There is also an accompanying editorial. A follow-up study will be examining the adverse cardiac effects of nitrous oxide.
