Large prospective survey of epidural complications

The May issue of Anesthesiology reports the findings of a 16 year survey of 8,210 epidurals for postoperative analgesia from David Scott's group at St Vincents Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. From this data there were, two spinal hematomas (1:4,105) and six epidural abscesses (1:1,368). Only one patient required surgical decompression. There were no long-term neurologic sequelae in any patient.
